CBD for Depression

Depression is a debilitating condition that can severely affect both the mind and body of those suffering. If you ever feel alone in your depression, know that you’re not. In the U.S., there are currently an estimated 16.2 million adults that have experienced at least one major episode of depression within a year - that’s 6.7% of the population. 

Of those affected by some form of depression, more and more are incorporating CBD oil into their treatment regiments and are reporting positive results. Studies and clinical trials are still in the beginning phases; however, there is a lot of indication that CBD could be an effective form of treatment to help in depression recovery.

When you have depression, it must be treated as importantly as any other health diagnosis; this is because the symptoms of depression can severely impact your daily life. Some of the symptoms can include:

  • Feelings of sadness
  • Loss of hope
  • Increased anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Loss of energy
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Sleeping too much
  • Overeating
  • Undereating
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Digestive problems
  • Aches and pains

It’s imperative if you think you have depression that you speak with your doctor right away to devise a treatment plan. Several things can potentially be factors in developing depression, such as chronic stress and anxiety, past trauma, isolation, genetics, physical pain or illness, or other emotional problems or disorders. 

What Studies are Showing

CBD testing for depression is still in its early stages - but there’s already promising results and reports. In 2014, for instance, a team of researchers in Brazil concluded that they think CBD can be an effective treatment for some psychiatric disorders. This is believed to be because of the positive way in which they observed CBD interacting with the brain’s serotonin receptors. A review was also conducted in 2018, in which the authors noted that a lot of studies that have been performed in animals had shown CBD to have an antidepressant and anti-stress effect. While there is still a lot of research and clinical trials to be conducted, initial findings definitely seem to be positive in showing the benefits CBD can potentially have.

Should I Take CBD for My Depression?

Research and study aren’t conclusive yet on the benefits of taking CBD for your depression. Many of those suffering from depression, however, are searching for better and more natural alternatives to sometimes harsh medications or for something they can take along with current medications to benefit and encourage their recovery. The number of those taking CBD for depression is growing, and the positive reports on by its users are encouraging. Because depression is a serious disease, however, you should include your physician in your decision to incorporate CBD in your health regiment. 

How Much CBD Should I Take?

Due to users responding differently to CBD, and because the cause and severity of depression being treated vary, there is no set standard for how much to take. Doses can range from 20 mg for mild to moderate conditions, to higher 50-100 mg for more severe depressive disorders. 

While rare, there is a possibility you can experience certain side effects from taking CBD, such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Changes in appetite
  • Changes in weight
  • Diarrhea
