CBD for Anxiety

Treatment of anxiety with CBD oil has become increasingly popular over the past few years, and with good reason. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, currently in the U.S., there is 18% of the population suffering from an anxiety disorder - that’s 40 million Americans! The number of undiagnosed adults who have reported a general increase in anxiety and stress is also at an alarmingly high rate of 40%, according to the American Psychiatric Association (APA). With numbers this high, and only 28% of those with anxiety seeking treatment from a mental health professional, it’s not surprising that natural remedies are being sought out.

What Studies are Showing

Research into how CBD can help treat conditions like anxiety is still in the beginning stages. Most of the studies conducted so far have been animal-based or preclinical. While more controlled clinical studies are needed, there have been some promising developments:

  • In 2011, the Neuropsychopharmacology publication spoke of a small study that was conducted on 24 people with social anxiety disorders. Twelve participants were given 600 mg of CBD and 12 were given a placebo; of those who took the CBD, anxiety was shown to be significantly reduced while giving a test speech.
  • A double-blind study was conducted in Brazil in patients with generalized anxiety order. Participants consumed CBD, reported decreases in anxiety, and these reports were then validated using brain scans. The scans showed cerebral blood flow patterns that indicated CBD was reducing anxiety.

It’s thought that CBD is possibly helping to reduce anxiety in 2 ways. The first is by working with serotonin receptors to increase signals being transmitted, which can help to boost mood and reduce anxiety. The second is by working with the hippocampus to help regenerate neurons thought to help reduce depression and anxiety.

Should I Take CBD for My Anxiety?

Many are turning to CBD for relief from symptoms of anxiety and are reporting phenomenal results. Physicians and researchers are also showing increased interest in CBD and beginning to conduct more research into its effects. Thus far, studies and usage are pointing to CBD being helpful in the following anxiety-related disorders:

  • Social phobias
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Depression
  • PTSD
  • OCD
  • Panic Disorder

Given all this information, the decision to begin a CBD regiment to combat anxiety symptoms is one you should make with your doctor; this is especially important if you are currently taking prescription medications. Do not stop taking any of your current medications without consulting with your physician first.

How Much CBD Should I Take?

The amount of CBD oil taken for anxiety varies from person to person. Many users will begin with a low dose of 10 mg and work their way up to 50 mg. It’s recommended that you start with the lowest dosage and make adjustments from there. Some users will exceed 50 mg if they are using CBD for more severe anxiety or panic-related disorders.

While rare, there is a possibility you can experience certain side effects from taking CBD, such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Changes in appetite
  • Changes in weight
  • Diarrhea

If you’re planning on adding CBD into your anxiety treatment regiment, please involve your physician in your decision. Do not stop taking any prescribed medications without discussing it with your physician.
